MICHAEL MAURISSENS

In both my practices: dance and film making, there is a strong focus on the creation process.
I have a passion for research, the quest of details and innovation and I am especially interested in developing further the concept: research becoming practice. Practice as research.
As a performer and dance artist I tempt to put myself in unknown situation, which forces me to apprehend the environment I am working in, as a new ground for research and creation.
SKILLS
I was born in Brussels, where I also began my dance training. I later studied at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung in Munich and the Professional Ballet school in Zurich. I danced with Ballet Nürnberg/Tanzwerk Nürnberg, Amanda Miller’s Ballett Freiburg Pretty Ugly, Mannheimer Ballett and pretty ugly tanz köln.
In 2008 I won the dance film competition POOL08 and was awarded the Kunststiftung/NRW bursary for upcoming talent in the field of choreography/dance. I took part to the SIWIC Choreography course in Zürich in 2009.
I graduated from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in summer 2013. He was a guest lecturer at the Tanzkongress in Düsseldorf and at the AVANCA Film Conference 2013 in Portugal.
EDUCATION
I am an independant film maker, I am co-artistic director of the MichaelDouglas Kollektiv, a unique dance collective that breaks from the standard form of choreographer-led groups within the German dance scene and I teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
